Chapter Twenty-one

Saul

“Are you okay?” Ruben asked me for about the millionth time.

I glared at him with contempt. “Fuck off!” I retaliated and returned to studying the layout of the kraken tower.

I didn’t die of a broken heart the last time Freya was ripped from my life and I would survive this time. The fact that I finally admitted to myself that I had secretly loved her for three hundred unrequited years added to my bad temper. The first person to seriously piss me of was going to receive the full blast of hell’s fire in their direction.

Ruben grabbed my arm and I stared at his fingers until he removed them. “We need your head in the game,” he said.

“As opposed to…” I let my voice trail off ominously. If he said her name, I’d break his nose.

“Up your ass.” He gave me that smartass smile. I was sure my face wore the same expression that Darius’ did when he aggravated him.

“You need to seek psychological help for you ass fetish,” I commented and continued to ignore him.

“Amen to that,” Darius muttered from beside Justus as they counted exits and windows of the kraken compound.

“His female is in the building opposite.” Justus threw that random fact out as if we should all already know that.

“I’m sorry? What did you say?” I enquired, not believing my ears.

He pointed to an apartment block. “She lives there.” A light illuminated one of the windows.

Ruben and I shared a troubled look. “And you didn’t tell us because…” I enquired.

Justus sighed. “She is Kaine’s greatest weakness. The old Justus wouldn’t have thought twice about slitting her throat. That was before I met Celeste.” He lowered his eyes to the ground.

There was no way I was in the position to criticise him. I took Freya to Valhalla and left her there to protect her from the upcoming war. There was a constant itch under my skin that I couldn’t quench that kept whispering that I should go and retrieve her.

I felt like I was starving in the midst of a banquet.

“And what are you going to do with her when all the other krakens are dead and she’s filled with rage and anger?” Ruben demanded. “Fuck!” His shout echoed around the room.

“I won’t kill an unprotected pregnant female,” Justus barked at Ruben, his hellhound rising to the surface. I felt him making his presence known as a denizen of hell.

“We’re running out of options,” Ruben said, trailing his hands over his face. “Allura and Elfie are working with that strange piece of wood the tree gave them, but we have no idea what it is or how we’re supposed to use it to heal the tree of life.”

Justus’ jaw tightened at the mention of the ‘cure’ from the wood guardian. Celeste had given a sacred piece of herself, and when they’d examined ‘the cure’ in the laboratory, it was nothing more than a piece of wood.

“We need a different perspective on this,” I said to no one in particular, rubbing the back of my neck.
